Wedding Ceremony Music

With Christmas been and gone and the wedding season floodgates already opened, many of you may be thinking about what music to play during your Wedding Ceremony.
Couples are often in a quandary about what music should be played during their ceremony.
There is no right or wrong choice. If you love it then it’s right.  Be it classical, pop, jazz or hip-hop, music helps set the tone of your big day.

Choose whatever music is right for you. If it’s really significant to you,  you may want to mention why during the ceremony.

Live music is AWESOME especially if it’s played/sung by a friend or family member.

Buy, hire or borrow the best sound system you can and ensure the person in charge is familiar with it. I.e. The volume and when to fade it in or out.

Most people ask how many songs are needed for the ceremony. The answer is, ‘As many as you like’. But apart from background music that you may want to play before and after the ceremony, there are often 3 times when specific songs are played.

1. Entrance. 2. Signing 3. Conclusion/Recessional (that’s if you are walking back down the aisle)

1.Entrance song/s – You may want to practice the timing so you ‘arrive’ at the bit you want guests to hear. If you are going for a relaxed ceremony then just ‘go with the flow’ – after all, it’s not a military performance.

2. Signing  This can often take at least 5 mins, especially if you are being positioned and photographed. I suggest either 1 very long song, 2 songs, or repeat the 1st song.  (NB. You can decrease the time needed for signing by getting your witnesses to prefill in their addresses)

3. Conclusion This is usually something upbeat, cheerful or triumphant

Alternatives. Why not alert the guests the ceremony is about to start with some special music chosen especially by or for the Groom. It can be fun and reflect his cheeky personality. EG. At a recent wedding the groom came forward to his entry music of ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ by Queen. Other grooms choices have been;‘Theme to Magnum PI’, ‘Highway to Hell’, AC/DC  and ‘Theme to the A team’ (as he and his Groomsmen made a formal entrance)

Maybe the words to your favourite song can be included as a reading.

If you are really keen, you can even have your guests dancing in the aisles or singing along. Check out this crazy entrance that is pretty unique and definately not for everyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0

What’s the most unusual entry music I’ve encountered I hear you ask? It has to be – Nirvana ‘Come as you are’ (especially the line…’No I don’t have a gun’) I’ve also had; ‘Who let the Dog’s out’ and  ‘No Leaf Clover’ by Metallica.
The most common entry song – must be Pachelbel’s Canon in D – Always a classic.

What was played at my wedding a zillion years ago? Barbara Streisand – ‘Evergreen’ and Procal Harum’s –‘Whiter Shade of Pale’.  They were both very in at the time and I still get a bit misty eyed when I hear them.

You will probably always remember your wedding entry song – so my advice is just to follow your heart.

Beautiful Weather, Beautiful Weddings and Beautiful Families!

Spring has arrived and with it some fantastic weather.

Congratulations to my recent couples who have all had the privilege of having their children involved in their bridal party.

Mark and Natasha married at the Belvedere steps in Cornwall Park with their children Amy and Anthony at their sides. Even having a guest faint during their ceremony couldn’t take the smiles off their faces.

Missy and Will chose Kiwani’s camp in Huia to tie the knot in front of Whanau and friends. The boys looked fabulous in their white suits, the bridesmaids wore black and the bride looked stunning in purple.

Just this weekend, Sherryn and Wade married at Pinewoods in Red Beach. A lovely touch was to present their daughter Stella Paige, with a ring symbolizing their commitment and love for her.

A few recent fabulous weddings

One of the things I love about what I do is meeting a diverse range of couples. They all come from different backgrounds and cultures, are of varied ages and stages in their lives. All have different needs, desires (and budgets) when it comes to planning their wedding ceremony – Small and intimate, casual and fun, family oriented, grand and formal.  Each is unique and each is wonderful. Here are some of my recent couples that I have had the real pleasure of being part of their special day.

Lahn and Keith – married in an intimate ceremony in Laingholm, at the home of their good friends (and mine) Robert, Angelika and Hannah.

Kimberley and Shaun – married at the ever beautiful Markovina Estate in Kumeu. (Photos are from the best photographers in the business, Amber and Isaac de Reus of Perspectives Photography)

Miho and Bevan at the stunning Settlers Country Lodge. This ceremony incorporated  a Daruma – a Japanese Wishing Doll. Having the services of a Japanese interpreter for Miho’s parents and arranged by Bevan’s Mum, was a lovely touch

Wyndi and Eli married at the Titirangi Soldiers Church and were supported by their 4 handsome young sons. Their eldest son, multi talented Romero, did a reading in Maori, Samoan and English – Very special!

Raewyn and Shane married at Butterfly Creek. They incorporated a lovely sand ceremony with different colours for them and their 5 beautiful children.

Judy (aka Yun Ting) and James chose the steps of the gorgeous Alberton House for their fabulously unique and fun ceremony. Of all the special moments, I have to say that James (resplendent in a top hat) serenading Judy as she entered on his baritone ukulele was  just wonderful.

Lilly (aka Lalita) and Daniel travelled thousands of miles from the UK to marry at the beautiful and popular Gracehill Vineyard Estate, supported by their family and friends.

Just this weekend I was back at Gracehill Vineyard Estate, to  marry Aimee and Jason. Fabulous weather for a fabulous couple!

Welcome to the new Ceremony Planning Services website!

Wow. My 1st ever blog post, hopefully the first of many.

Often people say ‘It must be awesome being a celebrant’ to which I invariably reply, “Well as a matter of fact it is!’

I’ve been doing ceremonies, (mostly weddings but also plenty of Civil Unions and Naming Ceremonies) for about 10 years now. I have met some awesome people and by being involved in their ceremonies, I have shared in many truly magical moments.

Who was it that said ‘Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take you breath away’

Recently my son in law Isaac wrote on his blog why he loves photographing weddings. It nearly had me in tears and reminded me of why I love creating and participating in ceremonies of the heart. I love:

  • Hearing peoples love stories
  • Talking about options and therefore encouraging couples to personalise their ceremony
  • Telling the nervous groom on the day how fabulous he looks
  • Watching the grooms face when he sees the bride for the first time.
  • Offering a tissue when there are tears during the vows
  • Hearing children’s voices and their laughter at weddings
  • Hearing the range of ‘surprise’ readings
  • Those unscripted moments in the ceremony, Laughter from guests, Responses from families, Tears during Vows
  • The look of delight after pronouncing a couple married you know, after that first kiss

Yes I am indeed lucky to be a celebrant!

Enough for my first blog. Finally, just like receiving an award, before I sign off, I would like to thank a few people for supporting me in getting my new website. My web designer Joe Brightwell, from Pukeko Design studio www.pukekodesigns.co.nz who is so clever and talented and Amber and Isaac de Reus, my awesome daughter and son-in-law, who are also the best damn photographers in the business – www.perspectivesphotography.co.nz

I couldn’t have done it without you guys. Thank you!
